Four months (June 23, 2005) after the end of The Gates' installation forty-eight items were listed for sale on the Ebay search Christo The Gates. Standing on the base and touching the fabric of The Gates seemed to be the most common impulse among visitors.

Christo and his lawyers have aggressively sought to limit images and use of the name. There have been other recent efforts to copyright public space.
